Dan Spector – Global Montreal

As the Lake Ontario shoreline towns call for relief from high lake levels, high water on the St. Lawrence River has the authorities saying they can’t take any more.

Environment Canada has warned St. Lawrence River residents to prepare for the worst floods in 40 years as more rain zeros in on their region. The same rains that have sent Lake Ontario nearly two feet above average for this time of year have also flooded river communities this week.

Two Montreal neighborhoods are underwater and people had to be evacuated to shelters yesterday. A large part of that city is on the Island of Montreal in the St. Lawrence and some of the neighborhoods are on smaller islands where the river branches into three channels and flows through the city.

Bridges to those islands are underwater and water rescue teams were checking on the cut off residents today.
