At spot in the Genesee Gorge at the Lower Falls has been designated a National Underground Railroad “Network to Freedom” site.
Kelsey’s Landing was once located in the River Gorge in Maplewood Park, near the Driving Park Bridge. Mayor Lovely Warren says the National Park Service has declared it an important historical site; one of the places where volunteers would help escaping slaves get to freedom in Canada by boat. The mayor says it’s a testament to Rochester’s legacy as a proponent of liberty and social justice.
The Lower Falls Foundation worked to win the designation for the site where Frederick Douglas and others directed many slaves to eventual freedom.
Kelsey’s landing was as far as lake boats could come up the Genesee River, and it was Rochester’s main port until rail lines were built to Charlotte later in the 19th Century.
