The New York State Public Service Commission has given Charter Communications another 45 days to respond to July’s order that it stop doing business in New York. The commission voted on the extension Thursday.

The PSC voted in July to reverse the Charter-Time Warner Merger which created Spectrum — the state’s largest cable TV and internet company. It ordered Charter to find buyers for Spectrum’s TV, internet and phone services and gave the company two months to arrange its own breakup. The reason: the commission feels Spectrum failed to follow through on its promise to expand broadband internet service to rural parts of upstate New York.

The company is filing a petition for a rehearing. Spectrum has more than two-and-a-half million customers across New York State.
