Governor Andrew Cuomo has authorized some high school sports to begin play this fall, while some others will be kept on “practice only.”

In a Monday morning news conference, Cuomo said lower risk sports including tennis, soccer, cross country, field hockey and swimming can begin competing in all regions of the state September 21st. Teams won’t be allowed to travel, practice or play outside of their region at first. Travel sports will come in October.

Higher risk sports including football, wrestling, rugby and ice hockey are allowed to resume practice, but not yet to play.

Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo said the state is watching a slight upturn in COVID-19 cases in Western New York. Testing detected the increase in cases at a steel plant and two nursing homes among others. The region’s infection rate is above one percent…while the rest of the state is below one percent for more than two weeks.
