The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says it’s reviewing how a deputy handled a recent case involving a welfare check on an elderly woman.
The deputy was called to a Metro PCS store on Empire Boulevard in Penfield. The caller said they were concerned about a woman who appeared to be in her 80s, and felt she couldn’t leave the store safely on her own.
The sheriff’s office says the deputy stopped the woman from leaving the store and brought her back to the lobby, then requested both an ambulance and a supervisor to the scene. The supervisor was made aware of concerns about the deputy’s behavior and realized an internal investigation was needed. Surveillance video has been requested from the store.
A statement says the deputy’s response “does not appear to fall in line with our training standards for such emotionally charged calls.”
