The driver who struck and killed a woman on Empire Boulevard in Webster last June has been sentenced to at least four years in state prison.
Maxwell Ward was sentenced after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter and five other counts against him. He read an apology to the family of Oksana Zakharchyshyn, who died in the crash. 15-year-old Oleksandra Zaharchyshyn and three-year-old Maksym Tsybrii were injured, but recovered.
Prosecutors say Ward was reaching for his cell phone while taking a curve when he struck the family as they walked on the side of the road. He drove off, hid the Toyota RAV4, then eventually turned himself in to police.
