United States Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are urging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a Great Lakes Resiliency Study…similar to the one they did for the Atlantic Coast after Hurricane Sandy.

The two New York Democrats want the Corps to include funding in its 2019 budget request. The study would look into how to toughen the infrastructure along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River to deal with continuing high water levels and spring flooding. The senators say fixing problems here and there as they arise is not the way to go with a problem that affects an entire region.

The Resiliency Study is being proposed by the three Great Lakes District Offices of the Corps of Engineers: Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo. The senators are urging headquarters to approve. Congressman Chris Collins of Buffalo, a Donald Trump supporter, is also backing the study.
