Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing for federal resources to address the spread of toxic blue-green algae in the Finger Lakes. The New York Democrat says it could contaminate drinking water and slam local economies that depend on tourism and fishing.
The algae blooms in summer with a combination of sunlight and warm water temperatures. There were more than 200 outbreaks in more than 150 lakes and ponds across New York State this year.
Senator Schumer says that’s going to keep happening if we don’t take action.
