Schumer and other New York lawmakers have pushed annual federal funding of the laser lab, to the tune of $68 million in the current budget. Schumer is trying to make a case to boost it to $75 million a year.

The Laser Lab is one of the nation’s leading research centers for optics, photonics and the attempt to generate a controlled hydrogen fusion reaction.
