The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims of Monday’s double shooting in Sodus as 28-year-old Joshua Niles and 24-year-old Amber Washburn.
Wayne County deputies and New York State Police continued their efforts to apprehend the man who gunned the couple down in the driveway of a house on Carlton Street in the village on Monday. The house is a short distance from the Sodus school district campus, leading the district to lock down its schools for about three hours before sending the children home.
Schools were closed in Sodus Tuesday as the search continued for the killer. Sheriff Barry Virts briefed the media on Tuesday morning, saying there was no sign of him yet.
The shooter ran off and was being sought with K9 units, drones and a police helicopter. Deputies and troopers spent the night searching the neighborhood around the shooting scene and cordoning off roads in Sodus. They also checked vacant buildings, including temporary residences used by migrant fruit farm workers who are now leaving as the season wraps up.
