Investigators are still looking into the cause of last night’s two-alarm fire on Hertel Street that killed one person and sent six others to Strong Memorial Hospital.
Firefighters were called to 20 Hertel Street, off Brown Street, at 8:10 Monday night. The first crews arrived to find the porch and one side of the house engulfed in flames. People on scene told them there could be people trapped inside. Several women and children jumped from windows and were caught by neighbors.
Lt. Ted Kuppinger says firefighters called a second alarm and entered the burning house, where they found one person dead. No information has been released yet about that victim.
Three adult women and three children were taken to the hospital. All six, ranging in age from seven to 60 years old, are in stable condition and expected to recover.
The fire investigation unit is on scene today looking for clues on how the fire started.
