New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is suing Charter Communications, Spectrum and the former Time Warner Cable for defrauding their internet customers. Schneiderman says Charter Spectrum advertised internet speeds they knew they couldn’t deliver.

He calls it an “ongoing, conscious plan of deception.”

Schneiderman says since January of 2012, Spectrum-TWC promised fast, reliable internet connections from anywhere in the home. But they say a 16-month investigation, including a study of supoenaed corporate communications, found customers were dramatically short-changed.

In fact, the attorney general says download speeds for the premium plans were up to 70 percent slower, and in some cases 80 percent slower than what customers paid for.

Schneiderman says this confirms that Time Warner for years was ripping people off.
