Police in Gates have put out a scam warning and also an appeal for people to help them track down the scammers.
They say they’ve taken several reports over the past few months for people who were given movie prop money at garage sales and for sales arranged online. The latest was Tuesday, when Gates Police say a local resident complained he arranged the sale of an item on Craigslist, then was given two $100 bills when he met the buyer at a parking lot. Only after the buyer left did the victim notice the hundreds were stamped “for motion picture use only.”
Lt. Jon Ballard says the suspect in this case is a black man in his late 20s, about six-four and driving a black two-door Honda Civic that was in rough shape. The Gates PD would appreciate a call if anyone recognizes him.
Ballard also says you should look at the money when making a person-to-person sale and make sure it’s legit. If you do yard sales frequently, get a counterfeit detecting marker at an office supply store. They’re about $10.
