Buffalo holds off the Pittsburgh Penguins by a 3-2 count.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Carter Hutton made 14 saves over two periods, and Vladimir Sobotka had a goal and an assist for the Buffalo Sabres in a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.

Jake McCabe scored the second goal for Buffalo (2-0) as Jack Eichel’s shorthanded tally proved to be the game-winner for the Sabres, who outshot the Penguins (0-1) 14-7 in the first period.

Pittsburgh defensemen Will O’Neill and Juuso Riikola scored 38 seconds apart late in the third period to avert the shutout. Casey DeSmith made 26 saves for the Pens.

Scott Wedgewood relieved Hutton at the start of the third period and made 10 saves.
