As we get ready to get the NHL season started again in a few weeks, the Buffalo Sabres prospect pool got some more love from a big media source today. A few weeks after being named the top prospect pool by The Sporting News. Today, The Athletic put the Sabres at the top of their prospect rankings as well.
Corey Pronman compiled a prospect ranking of all 31 NHL teams that he released over the past few weeks. The big reveal came today that the Sabres came out on top, with the Vancouver Canucks ranking second.
Pronman even went as far to write in his Sabres article that, “Buffalo has the top farm system and it isn’t really close.” Of course, adding players like Rasmus Dahlin and Casey Mittelstadt at the past two drafts will catapult you to the top of the rankings.
Nonetheless, it’s an impressive jump from where they sat just two years ago, when they had perhaps one of the worst prospect systems in the league. While Dahlin and Mittelstadt are at the top of the prospect system for the Sabres, you’ve seen in our recent top 25 under 25 series that there’s some good depth.
Players like Victor Olofsson, Rasmus Asplund, Marcus Davidsson, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, C.J. Smith, Brendan Guhle, Will Borgen, DannyO’Regan, Mattias Samuelsson, and Alex Nylander are some of the names that contribute to a deep group. Not to mention a player like Oskari Laaksonen who has surprised a lot of people with his current development in Finland.
Oh, by the way the Sabres currently have three first-round picks in the 2019 NHL Draft.
The future looks bright, now we just need it to translate to the ice.
