Matt Moulson can be sent to Rochester Americans as soon as today.

DENVER – Sabres winger Matt Moulson has cleared waivers, meaning the Sabres can proceed with sending the 34-year-old to the Rochester Americans.

Moulson, who had no points in 14 games for Buffalo this season, will count $3.975 million against the Sabres’ salary cap for the rest of the season.

Moulson was a three-time 30-goal scorer with the New York Islanders earlier in his career, but the 34-year-old has seen his numbers plummet. He scored 13, eight and 14 goals during the last three seasons. He has 13 shots and a minus-9 rating while skating 10:17 per game this year.

A claim seemed unlikely considering a TSN report that said Buffalo was willing to retain part of Moulson’s salary in a trade, but found no takers.

Under terms of the 2013 collective bargaining agreement, a team sending a player to the minors gets limited cap relief and can no longer bury a player’s full salary. Moulson was making $5 million this year and his contract runs through next season, making him a possible buyout candidate come June.
