The only time the host Calgary Flames took the lead was the time when it meant the most – at the end.
Calgary battled back three times to tie the Buffalo Sabres, then scored the game-winner in overtime for a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night.
Zemgus Girgensons gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead in the first period. The Flames tied it up, but Ryan O’Reilly’s power play put Buffalo back in front after two periods, 2-1.
In the third stanza, Marcus Foligno turned the puck over as Calgary converted to knot the game 2-2. However, Foligno made up for it a couple of minutes later when he took a pass from Greece native and team captain Brian Gionta and ripped a shot home for a 3-2 lead.
But for the third time, the Flames battled back to even the count at 3-3.
Rookie forward Nick Baptiste made his NHL debut for Buffalo.
The Sabres continue their Western Canada trip with a game in Vancouver on Thursday.
