PITTSBURGH, PA. — Phil Kessel scored two first-period goals to start the Pittsburgh Penguins toward a 5-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at PPG Paints Arena.

Kessel scored at 17:23 and 19:54 to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. They were his first two goals of the preseason.

Alex Nylander scored 6:50 into the second period, off an assist from Jason Pominville, to make it 2-1, before Kris Letang (7:22), Derick Brassard (16:54) and Matt Cullen (17:07) made it 5-1.

Matt Murray made 21 saves for Pittsburgh. Linus Ullmark made 27 for Buffalo, which dropped to 2-4 in the preseason.
