Buffalo can’t hold a 3-0 margin and falls in a shootout, 4-3, to the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Buffalo Sabres squandered a 3-0 lead and ended up in a shootout against the Flyers in Phildelphia on Tuesday night.
Tyler Ennis redirected a shot by Zemgus Girgensons to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead early in the second period.
Matt Moulson scored a power play goal, off an assist from Ryan O’Reilly, for a 2-0 advantage less than 2 minutes later. Moulson scored again on a power play late in the stanza, off a pass from Kyle Okposo.
Leading 3-1 late in the third period, the Flyers converted on two consecutive power plays to knot the count at 3-3.
The teams played a scoreless overtime period to force the shootout. The Flyers scored on their second and third shots to secure the come-from-behind victory.
Sabres goalie Robin Lehner was sidelined with an illness and did not make the trip. Buffalo backup keeper Anders Nilsson made his season debut as he registered 38 saves. Linus Ullmark, who was recalled from the Rochester Americans, was the backup goalie.
Buffalo returns to the KeyBank Center on Thursday to take on the Minnesota Wild.
