Geneseo Police say they’ve ticketed a Rush man with failure to obey a traffic control device after his pickup truck crashed into the village’s historic bear fountain, then went through the front door of the Village Cafe restaurant on Main Street.
Police say 62-year-old Paul Stevenson of River Road wasn’t hurt in the crash. They say there was no intoxication; Stevenson apparently didn’t see the granite fountain basin until he hit it and knocked it slightly off center. A village police officer was behind the truck and saw the accident.
It’s the second time a truck hit the 1888 fountain this year. A tractor trailer crashed into it in April, knocking the basin off the base and toppling the bronze bear that crowned the fountain off her pedestal.
The village has hired Moorland Studios of New Jersey to find matching stone and restore the fountain. There’s no word on whether this latest incident will set things back.
