Regional Transit Service officials say after conversation with Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, they’ve decided to reverse the position they took on Tuesday and continue to require masks while riding on RTS buses and in facilities such as the Transit Center.

RTS had said Tuesday it was making masks optional following the court ruling this week that overturned the mask requirement on airlines and railroads.

A statement issued early Wednesday morning says it was made clear to RTS that the mask mandate must remain in place per New York State Department of Health orders, issued March 2.

RTS will continue to make masks available at its public facilities to make it easier to comply, and they encourage people not to ride transit if they’re feeling sick.
