In response to the police reform laws passed by the New York State Legislature, the City of Rochester is setting up an online database on police department disciplinary records.
Communications Director Justin Roj says the city has already received requests for those records, and setting up a database will make it easier for the public to view them. Roj says it will not be necessary to file Freedom of Information Requests.
The city hopes to have the database up and running no later than the end of the year. The database has to be established and the department records digitized and indexed so they can be entered into it.
Roj says it’s a lot of effort but the city hopes it will pay dividends once the files are available to the public online.
