Students did better on standardized English Language and math tests this spring, both statewide and in Rochester. But Rochester students continue to deliver the worst performance of the “Big 5” school districts in the state, with just 7.6 percent of third-through-eight graders testing “proficient” or better in English, and about eight percent in math.
Both of those are up by less than one percentage point. Comparable percentages from Buffalo are more than twice as high for both English and math proficiency. New York City
students are showing proficiency rates about three-and-a-half times better than Rochester’s.
Nearly one fifth of the students are still being kept from taking the tests statewide by their parents, who oppose standardized testing.
Nineteen percent were held out of the testing this cycle, down a bit from 21 percent last time.
Statewide, nearly 40 percent of students in grades three through eight tested as “proficient” or better…up by two percent from last year. The proficient rate in math was also 40 percent, up one percent.
