SUNY Geneseo is partnering with Rochester City School #19 in an improvement plan that would see the college’s professors working with teachers and college students working directly with students.
City School Board President Van White says this isn’t a complete takeover, the way East High School is now being run by the University of Rochester. Instead, it’s a teacher-led plan to improve the school’s results.
The plan depends on State Education Department approval of a $2.5 million grant application and an Education Partnership Organization agreement.
District officials have sent a letter to parents of School 19 students saying the grant would provide an additional $500,000 to support the school for the next five years, hopefully starting in the fall. It says students will get more personalized instruction and more opportunity to take part in arts, drama, science, sports and community development.
White says it will give the school some “educational firepower.”
