Members of a Rochester police SWAT Team shot and killed a suspect Friday night who began shooting at them as he tried to flee.
Rochester Police Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan says the man was in his 20s and was a “high risk” suspect, wanted for attempted murder, first degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He was a suspect in several Rochester shootings.
The chief says officers kept the suspect under investigation for several hours after locating him at her order, until he was no longer with relatives and other people. But when police moved in to make the arrest near the corner of Hudson Avenue and Durnan Street, the suspect began running across back yards, pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Officers returned fire, and the suspect was hit. He died later after being taken to the hospital. One officer fell while evading the gunfire and suffered minor injuries. Chief Herriott-Sullivan says he got a bullet hole through his uniform, but somehow was not hit.
SWAT Team members don’t wear body cameras, so the chief said police are looking for surveillance camera video that might show the incident. The New York Attorney General’s Office has begun a review of the case.
