Rochester Police say their officers will wear body cameras beginning in August…and will have them on while answering 911 calls and have them on during pursuit, use of force, detention and arrest situations. But they won’t wear them while on neighborhood foot patrols.

Police released more details of the camera program today. Officers will start training in August and the program will roll out first in Clinton Section. All other patrol divisions will have them by February.

In a briefing, Police Chief Michael Ciminelli said officers will be recording “virtually any interaction” with the public, at least initially. The question of when the cameras should be rolling is still being worked out.
