Rochester police broke up two large crowds Thursday night and Friday morning.
The first came about 11:30 Thursday night when a large crowd gathered at Jay and Orchard Streets, at first as a memorial for a shooting victim. Police tried to break up the crowd of about 100 people and had bottles and rocks thrown at them. Some officers were struck but not injured. They fired pepper balls to disperse the crowd. Two men and a woman were arrested on charges including rioting and resisting arrest.
While the Jay Street situation was still going on, the next incident was underway on North Clinton Avenue. Police learned of gunshots being fired but it appears nothing was struck. In this case, the crowd dispersed and nobody was arrested.
Both gatherings were in violation of Mayor Warren’s executive order banning outdoor gatherings.
