The CIty of Rochester and the Wayne County Village of Newark are each to receive $10 million in funding from the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Lt. Governor Brian Benjamin made the announcement Thursday at Rochester City Hall. Newark will use its funding to enhance the area around the Erie Canal section of the village with new commercial and residential development. Mayor-Elect Malik Evans says Rochester will use its money to partner with local developers to upgrade the rundown corner of Main Street and North Clinton Avenue, the unofficial heart of downtown and site of several earlier plans that fell through.

Evans says blight will be a target of his administration, and the public and private sectors working together are the way to go.
