The Rochester man accused of accidentally shooting and killing his sister in law in a hunting accident has pled guilty to a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office says 50-year-old John Lander accepted a plea deal. He’ll spend four months of weekends in jail, with eligibility for work release.

Lander was hunting with a group of people in Caledonia back in November when his shotgun went off. It struck 45-year-old Sharon Lander of Rochester in the stomach and killed her. Paperwork filed in court says John Lander told deputies he was taking the shotgun off his shoulder when he dropped it. The safety wasn’t on and it fired.

Lander will remain free on bail until his sentencing date is set by the Livingston County Court.
