A Rochester man is dead and two members of his family were critically injured in a shooting incident while attending a soccer tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
The ABC affiliate in Columbus says 25-year-old Omar Abdulkadir Ali was killed. His 23-year-old Brother, Ali Abdulkadir Ali was injured and his cousin, Mohammed Deq was also. Both are in critical condition.
The three of them were riding in an SUV, possibly with a fourth man, when another group of people fired into the SUV. Columbus police say it may have been an attempted robbery of the fourth man, who was either in the van or next to it when the shooting started. Police are questioning him.
The brothers and their cousin are all Somali refugees. According to the Mary’s Place Refugee Outreach in Rochester, they all came here several years ago to escape the civil war and bloodshed in their homeland. All three were playing for a team in the soccer tournament.
