A driver is dead after his car crashed into a house early this morning on Portland Avenue. Police believe the 58-year-old city man probably had some sort of medical episode before he jumped the curb and hit the brick front stairs of a home in the 400 block.
The driver was found unconscious behind the wheel and taken to Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police say there was little damage to either the car or the house in the 3:25 a.m. crash, and the occupants of the house actually slept through the incident until contacted by police.
This is the second vehicle crashing into a house city police have had to investigate within about 12 hours. The earlier incident involved a pickup truck jumping the curb on East Main Street near North Goodman and crashing into the side of a house.
One of the two people at home when the truck came crashing through suffered a leg injury and was treated and released from Strong Memorial Hospital. The driver was checked out at the hospital as a precaution.
The house was so badly damaged it had to be torn down. Police are still investigating and no charges have resulted so far.
