An 18-year-old Rochester man has been charged with second degree arson, attempted murder and second degree assault after setting a fire at the Elk Hotel on North Clinton Avenue.

Police say Dylan Kincaid was arrested after they and Rochester firefighters responded to the downtown building just after 2:00 this morning. A mattress had been set on fire, producing heavy smoke and flames that forced evacuation of the building. Everyone got out safely, but one man suffered a cut hand while smashing the glass to activate the fire alarm.

He was arraigned this morning and bail was set at $15,000.

Police say they found Kincaid was visiting a person in his room when that person fell asleep and woke up to find his bed on fire.

The case is being handled by the fire department’s Arson Investigation Unit and their investigation is continuing.
