New York’s Department of Taxation and Finance says it’s seized nearly 43,000 untaxed cigars and arrested a Rochester man for smuggling them into the state.
Forty-two-year-old Anwar Ahmed of Rochester has been charged with criminal tax fraud and possession of untaxed cigars. The state says agents of the Tax Department Cigarette Strike Force followed him on a trip into Pennsylvania. They saw Ahmed load about 50 boxes of tobacco products into his vehicle and return to New York State.
He was arrested in Chemung County after crossing the border and will appear in Chemung Court next month.
