A Rochester man suffered serious burns early Wednesday morning when he tried to douse a grease fire in his kitchen.

Firefighters say the victim was cooking about 3:30 a.m. in his house on St. Paul Street when the pan caught fire. He tried to douse it with water, which caused the grease to boil over and flare up. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The fire department says don’t throw water on a grease fire. Use a fire extinguisher, smother it with salt or a pan lid, or better yet, call them.

The other occupants of the home got out safely.
