Rochester Firefighters sent a rope rescue team down into the Genesee River gorge late this morning to rescue a driver whose car fell more than 100 feet to the river below.

A fire department spokeswoman says a person saw the car go off the road in Maplewood Park, near Maplewood Drive and Seneca Parkway, go through a fence and over the cliff at about 11:15. Both a rope rescue and water rescue team were called, but when they got down into the gorge they found the car had landed on the river bank. The car was on its side and the driver was out and standing next to it.

The water rescue team got the man into their boat and safely to a landing on the other side of the river. It took just 23 minutes to get to the victim and 15 more to get everyone out of the water.

The patient was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
