Fire hit an apartment building on St. Paul Street just north of Brewer Street Tuesday night, with smoke detectors alerting the residents to get out.

The Rochester Fire Department says all made it out safely as the building filled with smoke. They traced the fire to an apartment and forced their way in to extinguish it. The damage was confined mostly to that apartment, although there was water damage to the rest of the building.

The burning apartment was vacant, and the cause is being investigated.

The Red Cross assisted the residents with temporary housing.
