New York Attorney General Letitia James says a Rochester doctor has been indicted on a manslaughter charge for the death of a patient who was recklessly prescribed opioid drugs.

Sudipt Deshmukh of Pittsford was a primary care physician whom James says prescribed a lethal mix of controlled substances to a patient he knew was struggling with addiction. In addition to manslaughter, the 55-year-old  Deshmukh was also charged with reckless endangerment and six counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance. Deshmukh was also charged with health care fraud for causing Medicare to pay for the prescriptions that led to the patient’s overdose death.

The indictment was unsealed on Thursday.
