The Rochester City School Board will hold a public hearing Thursday afternoon at 5:30 on a proposal for a new River Charter School in Rochester.

The hearing will be on the third floor of the district offices on Broad Street. The hearing is required before the proposal goes to the State Education Department for review.

The River Charter School would open in fall of 2018 if approved, and gradually work its way up to an enrollment of just over 500 students in grades K through 6.

Promoters of the River School hope to link its education plan to the example of the Genesee River ecosystem, and they plan to be the first school in the nation to offer a plant-based vegan food program and curriculum.
