The Rochester Institute of Technology cut the ribbon on its new MAGIC Spell studios Tuesday…following with an open house that showed off live filming of TV commercials, live audio mixing by sound engineers and short student-created films screened in a new theater.

The 52,000 square foot MAGIC Spell building is dedicated to film, animation, audio and digital media production. It’s the only one of its kind in the northeast. School officials say it ties together RIT’s film and animation, digital media and game design and development schools into a facility that rivals New York City media production studios.

It includes a sound stage, a movie theater, sound mixing and video production rooms, animation labs and other facilities. RIT says it will be the center of a media production outpost in the Rochester area.
