Sergio Campbell recently started for Jamaica vs. the USA on Feb. 3.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Rhinos announced the signing of center back Sergio Campbell, pending league and USSF approval.
Campbell most recently played for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the 2016 season, appearing in 26 matches and starting in 25.
Sergio was a 1st-round (19th overall) pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and started his career with the Columbus Crew. He played his collegiate soccer at UConn; having transferred from Central Arkansas after his freshman year. Capmbell started all 64 matches over his three years with the Huskies. He anchored the No. 4 Huskies in 2012 to a 17-4-1 and they reached the Elite 8. UConn (12-3-8) reached the Final Four in 2013; knocking off No. 1 UCLA in the process.
“Sergio is a really good physical presence for us. He’s really good in the air runs really well for a big guy,” coach Bob Lilley stated, “He spent time in our league with Pittsburgh as well as Columbus in MLS. We’re really happy with Joe (Farrell), Ryan (Felix) and Todd (Pratzner), adding Sergio just makes us stronger.”
He has earned 2 caps for Jamaica, earning his latest one in the friendly vs. the USMNT in Chattanooga, TN on Feb. 3.
The Rhinos continue their three-game road trip Friday night, as they take on Toronto FC 2. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm from the Ontario Soccer Centre. The match will again be broadcast on USL Match Center and on YouTube.
The club’s home opener is on Saturday, April 22 when the defending USL Cup champion New York Red Bulls 2 visit Capelli Sport Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:05 pm.
