What the Rochester Fire Department describes as “hazardous materials” were removed from the 7th floor of the 111 East Avenue apartments Wednesday night.

Fire crews were called to the building at 7:40 p.m. for a report of a heavy chemical odor. The Hazmat team was called and declared a Level 1 emergency. Residents of the 7th floor were sent to the lobby to wait while the fire department removed the source of the odors, which was not specified, and ventilated the building.

The residents were then able to go back to their apartments.
