Sean McDermott and “The Process” made their way to Western New York and the Buffalo Bills just as the 2017 offseason was ready to get rolling. But another team on Lake Erie also had McDermott in mind: the Cleveland Browns.

According to ESPN, the Browns’ front office brass nearly made an offer to McDermott to become their head coach at the same time the Bills hired him.

Per the report, a contingent of five front office members in Cleveland, which included team owner Jimmy Haslam, met to discuss who they wanted to hire as their new coach. It was a 4-1 vote in favor of McDermott. Only one person voted for recently fired Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson. It was Haslam.

In the end, Haslam got his way and McDermott’s tenure with the Bills is now entering its third offseason.
