Renee Bailey of Greece will not go back to prison after pleading guilty to an assault charge in the shaken baby death of Brittney Sheets.
Bailey was sentenced this morning to time served, plus two-and-a-half years of supervised release. She served more than 12 years in prison on her original murder conviction.
Bailey’s 2002 conviction in the toddler’s death was overturned by a judge. He ruled that modern-day science discounted the prosecution’s claim that only violent shaking could have caused Brittney’s fatal injuries. Bailey was convicted of murder despite maintaining the child had been injured in a fall.
After the Monroe County District Attorney prepared to retry Bailey, she agreed in June to plead guilty to the First Degree Assault charge.
Renee Bailey did not address the court. Brittney Sheets’ parents did, with her father saying he will never forgive what Bailey did.
