The Monroe County Legislature approved new election district maps for the county in a special meeting on Friday night, called before Republicans lose their majority on the legislature on January 1st. Democrats opposed the plan, and Democratic County Executive Adam Bello may veto it.

The district lines have to be redrawn every ten years after the new census is reported out.

The plan approved Friday was adopted in late November by a legislature redistricting committee, again with a majority Republican vote and over the opposition of Democratic members. Some Democrats argued the vote Friday night was illegal, and the Monroe County Democratic Party leadership has issued a note of protest.

Bello says the process by which the lines were drawn and approved was not transparent, with Democratic legislators saying amendments were not made available to them before the vote. Bello said he will hold a public hearing in January and take action within the 30 day timeline to either approve or veto the plan.
