Rochester keeps pace with Lehigh Valley for the Wild Card berth.

Jason Wheeler (11-4) pitched a 2-hitter over 8 innings while striking out 8 batters as the Rochester Red Wings shut out the Norfolk Tides, 6-0, on Tuesday night in Tidewater area of Virginia.

Kennys Vargas gave the Wings a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a home run that scored Byron Buxton and Reynaldo Rodriguez. In the third, he led off with a single and scored on Adam Brett Walker’s triple. Daniel Palka’s basehit plated Walker with the fifth run.

The Wings added a run in the eighth on a double by Mitch Garver, who went 4-for-4, and RBI single from Leonardo Reginatto, who was 3-for-4.

D.J. Baxendale hurled the ninth as the Red Wings’ staff recorded their 13th shutout of the year.

The Wings remain undefeated against Norfolk this season at 5-0 as the series continues on Wednesday night.

Rochester (73-58) remained 4.5 games behind Lehigh Valley (77-53) for the International League Wild Card berth.
