The right-hander won 80 games with Rochester from 1950-56.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – John “Jack” Faszholz, the Rochester Red Wings Hall of Famer and all-time leader with 80 wins, passed away on Saturday, March 25. He was 89 years old.

Known as “Preacher” during his playing days, Faszholz was an ordained pastor in The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod after his playing career. The right-hander made his Wings debut in 1950 and won double-digit games five straight seasons from 1951-55. Faszholz made his Major League debut on April 25, 1953 with the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. He was inducted into the Red Wings Hall of Fame in 1990.

Faszholz was asked what it was like playing with the great Stan Musial. “He made friends with everybody,” the pitcher-fielder remembered after he was released to the Minors. When the Cardinals played an exhibition game in Rochester, “Stan went out of his way during batting practice to come up to me in the outfield and ask me how everything was going.”

Faszholz also recalled how media coverage of Major League games had changed radically. Communications have “just exploded since those days.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of John E. Faszholz to the Lutheran High School Association of St. Louis, 5401 Lucas and Hunt Road., St. Louis, Missouri, 63121-1503 and Concordia University – Texas, 11400 Concordia University Drive, Austin, Texas 78726.
