The Monroe County Department of Public Health reported record numbers of new coronavirus cases over the weekend: 515 confirmed cases on Saturday, and 511 cases on Sunday.

Eight percent of people tested turned up positive on Saturday, which is the highest number since May 1st when it was 10.8. There are now more than 2,500 active cases of COVID-19 in Monroe County.

Monroe County is launching a new testing initiative, setting up sites where asymptomatic people can be tested for coronavirus in response to much of the community being designated an orange zone. Testing sites are being set up in Rochester, Irondequoit, Brighton and Gates.

Irondequoit Supervisor Dave Seeley said on Twitter Sunday night that the Irondequoit center has already been fully booked for appointments even before starting operations.

The sites are: East High School in Rochester beginning December 5th; Irondequoit DPW, see the signup page on the town website; Temple B’Rith Kodesh in Brighton Beginning December 8th; Gates, dates and times to be announced.

Health officials have warned of more surges to come following the Thanksgiving holidays.
