The Rochester City School District’s Finance Director reported a $76 million deficit for the current school year at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
Carleen Pierce reported during a special board meeting, called to review district finances. The district’s state-appointed monitor, Shelley Jallow, recommends “rightsizing” the district to account for its declining enrollment and save money. That would mean fewer teachers and increased class sizes.
Jallow is holding an online hearing Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to get public comment on the issue of academics and the district’s financing. The state is talking about possible 20 percent cuts in revenue it sends to school districts because of revenue losses from the pandemic.
