Kentucky hands Rochester its first defeat of the season, 102-91.
OWENSBORO, KY. — Playing their second game in two nights, the Rochester RazorSharks were unable to stage a second comeback as they suffered their first defeat of the season, 102-91, to the Kentucky Mavericks here on Saturday night.
The Sharks overcame a 21-point deficit on Friday night to beat the Ohio Bootleggers in Columbus.
The Mavericks (6-1) got out to a large lead very quickly in the first quarter that forced the RazorSharks (7-1) to play catchup for the entire game. The lead grew to 24 points at its peak in a game that Rochester did not earn a single lead throughout. One thing is for certain; the Sharks never gave up. There were moments where tempers flared, but even at the lowest points, the team came together and never accepted defeat.
Corey Allmond and Sidney Holmes did all they could to put the team on their backs, as Allmond dropped a game-high 27 points, while Holmes pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, but it was just not enough to overcome Kentucky’s phenomenal start.
The Mavericks were able to get a number of difficult shots to fall throughout the contest, while Rochester struggled to put offense together at times. Despite turning the ball over 20 times, Kentucky shot 42% from the field, while the Sharks finished at 35%.
The Mavs won the post battle, out-rebounding the RazorSharks 59 to 46.
Tonight’s loss was Chris Iversen’s first career loss as head coach. The team will get a chance at revenge next week when the Mavericks travel to the Blue Cross Arena on Kids Day, Monday, Feb. 20.
The Sharks take on the Chautauqua Hurricane at home on Thursday, Feb. 16.
