New York State has focused its railroad safety inspections on tracks east and west of Rochester in its latest round; finding numerous minor and two major problems that could have derailed a train if they hadn’t been caught.
Governor Cuomo’s office says the critical problems were found with a pair of track switches on the CSX line between Savannah and Lyons in Wayne County. The worn switch points were fixed the same day.
Inspectors also walked the track from Rochester west to Chili, and from Chili west to Alden in Erie County. They found 11 minor problems which have to be fixed within 30 days.
Inspectors looked over more than 100 crude oil tank cars at the CSX yard in Buffalo and found no issues at all.
The state has been doing enhanced inspections of tracks and tank cars that carry crude oil since derailments in other states and Canada led to explosions and fires involving trains carrying crude oil to refineries.
